Astley Castle

As part of the conversion of Astley Castle by the Landmark Trust, we were awarded the contract to repair and consolidate the curtain wall of the castle which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

A conservation led approach was undertaken, this involved the removal of vegetation, resetting of loose and fallen stones, replacement of small areas of missing stone and repointing of the wall face. All works were undertaken with the greatest of care. Stones were rebedded in lime mortar and all pointing works were undertaken in approved lime mortar mixes.

Three methods for capping the walls were used;  a lime mortar cap with nylon reinforcement, rough raking of stone and profiled lime mortar fill, and soft capping using layers of coir matting, soil and turf.
