Barr Beacon War Memorial

The War Memorial dates from 1933 and is octagonal in shape, made of Portland stone with a timber ‘dome’ roof structure supported by eight stone columns and initially surmounted with a copper roof covering.

For decades it has been the victim of crime, the railings were stolen over night in the 1970’s and March 2010 thieves stole some of the copper roof coverings and this happened twice more in 2011. The roof structure was subsequently covered with tarpaulins which is how it stayed until the commencement of our contract.

Works were carried out to reconstruct the timber roof structure prior to installation of the new green vmzinc roof covering. The local authority, who maintain the building, took the decision to replace the copper roof with zinc in order to deter thieves.

Bilacquered VMZinc system uses natural rolled Zinc as a base, which is then primed and lacquered on both sides and polymerised.  This zinc roofing system not only provides a practical solution to the problem, but also an aesthetic one. The green colour of the lacquered finish simulates the appearance of the original weathered copper roof of the dome.

The stone steps and paving were being repaired and relayed and repairs and indents are being carried out to the stone walls and columns of the memorial.
