St Joseph’s Carterton

Midland Conservation were appointed contractor for the re-roofing of St Joseph’s, Carterton.

The church building started out life as a threashing barn some 200 years ago. The barn was given to the catholic community for conversion to a church in 1940 in order to provide more space for the growing congregation.

A quinquennial report found the fabric of the roof had deteriorated and was in need of repair. With funding from English Heritage and the Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust an ambitious project to re-roof the natural stone slated roof slopes was undertaken.

Once stripped MCL undertook timber repairs to the oak roof structure before new and reclaimed stone slates were re-laid to the slopes.

Extensive lime pointing works were also undertaken to all elevations of the church, and new cast iron rain water goods were installed.
